Welcome, Harvard Medical School Residents & Fellows
GUARANTEED ISSUE DISABILITY INSURANCE WITH DISCOUNTS UP TO 30% – NO MEDICAL QUESTIONS ASKED!
Effective January 1, 2025, The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian) is making a special offer to the Residents and Fellows training at Mass General Brigham. You may obtain Individual disability insurance coverage through Guardian on a Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) basis. This is available anytime during your residency or fellowship and up to 90 days after you complete your training.
Guardian is an independent company. Guardian is not an official Mass General Brigham vendor or associated with, authorized, sponsored, or endorsed by Mass General Brigham.
Why should all Residents and Fellows buy disability insurance before they complete their training?
Disability Insurance- Individual disability insurance is personally owned and portable and pays tax free dollars to help fully protect income or supplement an employer provided group plan (taxable benefits). The BEST disability insurance protects your exact pre disability duties EVEN if you can earn other income doing anything else AND allows for increases over time as your income rises.
There are several main reasons for why its so important to lock in your first disability insurance policy during training.
- First, the cost will never be less expensive than it is now based on your age today, so, whatever benefit you secure now will have a level fixed cost for your entire career.
- Second, most carriers allow you to buy more benefit today without proof of income than would normally be allowed AND they add pools of far more benefits to increase overtime without hassle.
- Third, most companies will issue coverage to residents and fellows with significant discounts that stay with you for the rest of your career.
- Lastly, by securing your own policy now, you can then let your new employer group disability insurance stack on top without any income or benefit limitations. If you wait to buy individual coverage after you graduate, you will be limited in the amount of coverage you can secure at that time. So, let’s be sure you lock in your own portable, Specialty Own Occupation policy that truly protects your hard earned medical training. Also, take a few minutes to listen to our brief podcast addressing why it’s the best time to buy your policy!

Are you a Resident or Fellow Trying To Figure Out Which Insurance Company Has The Best Disability Policy? We Can Help!
Mensh Insurance is proud to work with Will Anderson from The Cason Group, an independent general agency offering all of the major disability and life insurance carriers nationally. Will’s brother, Jordan, completed his Internal Medicine Residency in June 2022 and as such, we have become very familiar with many departments and the various hospitals in your system.
If you do your homework (chances are high since you are at Harvard) you will find that there are certain “hot buttons” when it comes to Individual Disability Insurance for young physicians. Reference to the “Big 5” companies such as Principal, Mass Mutual, Guardian, The Standard and Ameritas is a good starting place as all have “true own occupation” language compared to other carriers who market “medical own occupation” but will not pay full benefits if earning income doing anything other than original duties. We are specialists in this market, we represent all of the major companies, and we can help you navigate each plan, the available discounts, and how to secure coverage via the application process. With experience working with residents nationally and within other programs at Wake Forest, UNC Chapel Hill, and Mayo Clinic, we understand your needs. To help you we have built a landing page to provide more information and ways to contact us to get your customized process started!
